A logic challenge to crack a secret four-digit number with distinct digits. Each guess gets a clue about how many digits are in the right place (bulls) and how many are present elsewhere (cows).

A calm bout of reasoning, solo against the app or cooperatively with several people debating each guess aloud. Good for waiting rooms, quiet after-dinner moments or teaching deduction by elimination.

How to play

Against the app, solo or co-op. Traditional rules, in our own words. Rules version 1.0.

In a nutshell

How to win: Work out the secret number in as few guesses as possible.

Start right away

  1. The app picks a number with four distinct digits.
  2. Propose a four-digit number with distinct digits.
  3. The app replies with bulls (right digit, right place) and cows (right digit, wrong place).
  4. Use the clues to rule things out and guess again until you get four bulls.

Setup

  1. Choose the code length (three to five digits) and whether repeats are allowed. The classic game uses four distinct digits.
  2. In co-op, the group agrees on every guess together; nobody knows the secret.

Turn by turn

  1. Enter a guess of the chosen length.
  2. The app tells you how many bulls and cows it scores, without saying which.
  3. The guess history stays visible to reason with.

A sample round

The secret is 4071. Guessing 1234 scores zero bulls and two cows (1 and 4 are there, elsewhere). Guessing 4501 scores two bulls (4 and 1) and one cow (0).

How it ends

The game ends when you hit the number (all bulls), run out of guesses if a limit was set, or give up.

Scoring

Fewer guesses is better. With four distinct digits, finishing in under ten guesses is a good result.
